The three parts of HVAC
Heating raises indoor temperature when it’s cold outside. Ventilation exchanges stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air, controlling humidity and air quality along the way. Air conditioning removes heat to cool a space. Most buildings need all three working together, coordinated by a single system rather than as separate appliances.
The main equipment involved
Chillers and package units generate the cooling (and sometimes heating) capacity. Air handling units move and condition the air. Ductwork distributes it through the building. Controls and thermostats tie it all together, and in modern systems, allow zoning so different areas of a building can be conditioned independently.
Why proper HVAC design matters
A correctly sized and designed system keeps temperature and humidity stable, keeps energy costs predictable, and protects indoor air quality. An undersized or poorly designed system runs constantly and still underperforms; an oversized one cycles inefficiently and costs more than it should, both in equipment and in running costs.

Even a well-designed system loses efficiency without regular maintenance — filter changes, coil cleaning, and periodic inspection all keep a system running close to its rated performance for its full service life, rather than degrading quietly until something fails.
