Ductwork is the network of channels — usually galvanized iron or pre-insulated panel — that carries conditioned air from the HVAC plant to every room or zone in a building, and carries return air back. It’s invisible when it’s done well, and a constant source of complaints when it isn’t.

Common duct types

GI (galvanized iron) ducting is the traditional choice for commercial and industrial buildings — durable and well understood by installers.

Pre-insulated ducting builds the insulation into the panel itself, cutting installation time and reducing thermal loss along the run.

Flexible ducting is used for shorter connector runs where rigid duct can’t easily reach, such as the final connection to a diffuser.

Why duct design matters as much as the equipment

Undersized or poorly routed ductwork chokes airflow no matter how good the AC unit behind it is — leading to uneven cooling, higher energy use, and excess noise. Leaky joints lose conditioned air into ceiling voids before it ever reaches the room it was meant for, which is a common and often overlooked source of wasted energy in older buildings.
